Delhi, the vibrant capital of India, is a city steeped in history, with its roots stretching back millennia. Among its many historical landmarks, Lal Kot and Qila Rai Pithora stand as testament to the city's rich past. In this article, we'll delve into the fascinating history and significance of these ancient fortresses, offering a glimpse into Delhi's bygone eras.
Lal Kot, meaning "Red Fortress," is one of Delhi's oldest known settlements. Built by the Tomar dynasty ruler, Anangpal I, in the 8th century AD, Lal Kot served as the capital of the Tomar kingdom.
Adjacent to Lal Kot lies Qila Rai Pithora, another significant fortification in Delhi's history. Built by King Prithviraj Chauhan, Qila Rai Pithora served as an extension of Lal Kot, further strengthening the defenses of the kingdom.
Named after King Prithviraj Chauhan, who was also known as Rai Pithora, the fortress witnessed several battles and sieges during its tumultuous history. Despite its strategic importance, Qila Rai Pithora eventually fell to the invading forces of Muhammad Ghori in the 12th century, marking a turning point in Delhi's history.
