German Life in Indiana before 1918 is a peek into the parallel German universe that existed with the mainstream American universe before its collapse brought on by America's entrance into the First World War. Churches, Turnvereins, musical societies, newspapers, banks, were parts of this German American infrastructure that furthered the German language and culture for three generations in Indiana from Fort Wayne to Haubstadt.
William L. Selm is an Indianapolis historian, who has been exploring the Germanness/Deutschtum of his native state since the 1970s. He is a cofounder of the Indiana German Heritage Society in 1984.
