UPSC Prelims is one of the toughest stages of the exam because it is designed as an elimination test. Every year, more than 5 lakh candidates appear, but only 2–3% clear Prelims, making it a high-pressure and high-competition stage. The difficulty has increased significantly after 2017, with UPSC shifting towards analytical, statement-based, and unpredictable questions. The syllabus is vast, covering Polity, Economy, Environment, History, Science, and Current Affairs, making consistent revision challenging.
Negative marking, tricky options, and rising dependency on applied knowledge make accuracy extremely difficult. UPSC also integrates current affairs into static subjects, creating grey-zone questions that are hard to prepare for. Many aspirants fail not due to lack of knowledge, but due to exam-day pressure, poor elimination skills, and insufficient revision.
This combination of vast syllabus, unpredictability, and intense competition makes UPSC Prelims exceptionally hard to crack.
