Gustav Adolf Merkel : Op. 137, Organ Sonata No. 6 in E minor
Gustav Adolf Merkel (1827-1885) was a German organist and composer. He spent most of his career in Dresden, concentrating on organ-playing from 1858. A Lutheran himself, he nevertheless held an appointment at the Catholic Cathedral of Dresden from 1864 until his death. During the same period he taught the organ at Dresden's Conservatory. This sonata is based on two contrasting Lutheran hymns. The first movement starts with an introduction and a fugue (01:34) on "Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir" (From deep affliction I cry out to you) and ends with the chorale presented in its entirety (04:31). The third movement is built in the same way: it starts with a serious introduction, then follows a bright fugue (13:32) before the sonata ends with the chorale "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern" (How lovely shines the morning star) (16:23).
