Perhaps one of the most delightful and charismatic Soviet gymnasts ever, Natalia Shaposhnikova was a mainstay on the National Team the last half of the 1970s. She competed at the 1978 and 1979 Worlds as well as the 1980 Olympics in Moscow--where she came home with two gold medals.
She is perhaps best known for her transition on bars--a clear hip on the low bar to the high bar, colloquially called a Shaposh (or Saposh as I heard a commentator say at a recent NCAA meet 😂). This basic transition has been the building block for a wide array of different transitions such as a Khorkina (Shaposh-half), a Maloney (toe-on Shaposh), a Chow (stalder Shaposh), and a Komova II (inbar Shaposh), just to name a few 😍.
Natalia's cheerful demeanor and contributions to the sport have made her a stan-favorite for decades. She is a bonafide Soviet treasure! 💗
