Rare Footage Reveals How China Prepared for War with Soviet Russia (1989)

On 19 April 1989, ITN explored the secret air defence tunnels beneath the Chinese city of Harbin. Constructed between 1973 and 1979 on the orders of the Chinese government, the tunnels formed part of air defence Project 7381, developed in response to the military threat posed by the Soviet Union. Just over 10 miles of tunnels ran beneath the city and were designed to protect Harbin from a possible Soviet invasion or nuclear attack. In later decades, the tunnels built in preparation for war with the USSR were repurposed to form part of the Harbin Metro system.
