Case Background: Dan Markel, a prominent Florida State University law professor and legal scholar, was brutally murdered in his Tallahassee garage on July 18th, 2014, in what authorities described as a meticulously planned hit. The case stemmed from a contentious divorce and custody battle with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, whose wealthy South Florida family allegedly orchestrated the killing to resolve the dispute. Hitmen Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera carried out the shooting for $100,000, connected through intermediary Katherine Magbanua, who dated Wendi's brother, Charlie Adelson. Garcia was convicted of first-degree murder in 2019, Rivera pleaded guilty and testified against others, and Magbanua was convicted in a 2022 retrial. Charlie Adelson was found guilty of murder, conspiracy, and solicitation in November 2023 and sentenced to life without parole.

Donna Adelson, the 75-year-old matriarch of the Adelson family, was charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy, and solicitation for her alleged role in funding and planning the plot. Arrested in November 2023 at Miami International Airport while attempting to flee to Vietnam, Donna has pleaded not guilty. Her trial, delayed from earlier dates, began jury selection on August 19th, 2025, in Leon County Circuit Court. She was convicted on all counts on September 5th, 2025.
