This winter season 2025/2026 has been one for the record books. As I mentioned in my recent weather updates, November and December were already significantly wetter than usual. But January 2026 has topped it all: with over 80 mm of rain recorded so far, we are seeing 60% more precipitation than the monthly average! 📊☔ These massive rainfalls combined with heavy Atlantic swells are creating a coastline that is both breathtaking and terrifying. 🌊😱
In this video, we take you to the most dramatic hotspots along the Western Algarve:
Cabo de São Vicente: The southwesternmost point of Europe is completely engulfed in sea spray today. Waves are crashing against the 75-meter-high cliffs with such force that you can literally feel the ground shaking beneath your feet! 🌬️🦅
Sagres: The iconic fortress is being battered by giant breakers. It is a sight that reminds us why ancient mariners believed this was the end of the world. 🏰🌊
Bordeira: This famous surf beach has turned into a boiling cauldron. The sheer volume of water and foam pushing onto the shore is absolutely insane! 🏖️💥
It is fascinating to watch the landscape transform under this natural pressure. However, safety is the number one priority: the limestone cliffs are extremely fragile and have been further weakened by the heavy rains of the past few months. Please, never go too close to the edge – no photo or video is worth the risk! 🛑📸
