I replaced the belt/serpentine tensioner pulley, idler pulley, serpentine belt, and spark plugs on a 2003 Mazda 6 2.3l car. This engine had 115k miles. I don't know if these parts have been replaced before. By the looks of the spark plugs, those seemed to be the original plugs. As for the belt, it could have been changed earlier in its life; same goes with the pulleys, but i could be wrong.
Anyway, the issue we had with this vehicle was, during cold startups in the morning, or Winter, a rattling noise was heard coming from the engine bay during take off at around 2,000 RPM. Once the engine warmed up, the rattle went away and operated normal.
I did a little research and found that this was a common thing for these engines. I first performed the easiest and cheapest mod, ADDING TWO LAYERS OF TIRE TUBE ON THE ENGINE MOUNT. This did not help the noise go away. If this was the cause of the rattle, replacing the engine mount would have only fixed it temporarily and cost me who knows how much. I found a inner tube and cut two pieces in square shapes to fit between the engine mount and mount plate. This mod should last another 50k-100k miles.
Next, I replaced the idler pulley, belt tensioner pulley along with a new serpentine belt (and spark plugs, because why not!). By replacing the two pulleys, the rattling noise that was heard at around 2000 RPM on cold days was fixed. Engine runs smoother too with the new plugs.
I'd say this is not a very hard job to do and does not require special tools. Tools i used were open-end wrenches, ratchet and 14mm socket, flat/phillips head screw drivers, and a jack.
Parts replaced:
Belt Tensioner Pulley: 305372 (Duralast)
Idle Pulley: 38006 (NAPA) or 231107 (Duralast)
Serpentine Belt: 5060885 (DAYCO)
Spark Plugs: NGK 7164
