Dr Richard Tooth, the humble all round sportsman who captained The Wallabies in the 1950s and went on to become a pioneering orthopaedic surgeon has passed away, aged 90.
Last year, I was invited by the Sydney University Football Club to record Dick Tooth's rugby story along with those of fellow Classic Wallabies Dr John Solomon and Prof. Saxon White.
A humble man of many achievements, Dick told me quietly of captaining Australia's first sporting tour of Japan after WW2 - the Australian Universities Rugby Tour of 1956. Some war veterans at home were outraged, he said, but he and his teammates found that the Japanese university teams were just like young people everywhere, and gave the Australians wonderful hospitality.
Dick played ten tests for Australia and went on to be a founding member of the Australian Knee Society, and vice-president of the Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA).
Here is an excerpt from the film, with narration by Gordon Bray.
