I have been climbing these stairs for what seems like centuries, yet the tower offers no summit, only the endless variation of ascent. The stone beneath my hand is porous and cool, smelling faintly of old incense and ancient rain. With every full rotation, I pass the same cracked pillar, the same archway framing a void of luminous white mist, but the perspective shifts imperceptibly. I am higher now, though the air grows thinner, biting at the back of my throat—a sharp reminder of the effort required to lift the weight of memory against gravity.
Pale shapes drift past me, a silent procession of pilgrims made of smoke and light. They do not speak; they only climb, their translucent robes brushing against the ruins without friction. The sound here is a constant, low resonance, like a great pipe organ breathing in its sleep, punctuated by voices that might be the wind or prayers caught in the masonry. My legs ache with a familiarity that is almost comforting. To stop is to slide back into the dark; to climb is to embrace the vertigo of becoming something else. The staircase does not end, it only refines the climber. I place my foot in the hollow worn by a million others, and I step up.
