Lateral Glides & D-Cuts + Reverse D-Cut Catches

In Episode #7: This quick session covers two of the essential skills on which we build lateral movement for blocking: Lateral Glides & D-Cuts. Mastery of these skills enables you to block boundary to boundary with speed and strength in your edges. These skills and the techniques we use to link them together for fluid movement are so integral to blocking effectively, we drill for them in all of my practices and they're a part of my own warm up routine.

The power of lateral glides and D-cuts are they allow you to maximize your edges, so you have the ability to go from a strong catching position to tracking an opponent across the track, make rapid directional changes, and maintain physical contact, all while continuing to have blocking integrity (stability, resistance, responsibility for your space). These foundation skills transformed the way I play derby---it takes consistent repetition of course, but you're rewarded with changes pretty early in and will continue to unlock new possibilities as the movements become familiar and then natural. Lateral glides and edging control are also super useful for jammers.

The Reverse D-Cut Catch is a more advanced move, pretty much in the same genre as the power stop, with an added 90 degree rotation.
