How to Date a Globe | Geography Detective

Follow along with Charlie as he demonstrates how to date a globe utilizing geography!

Obtaining an old globe is so exciting but one of the challenges is figuring out when it was made. They typically did not have a date or serial number, so you really have to rely on geography.

One of the first places to look is the Middle East. Is Israel is missing, we know right away that the globe was made before 1947. In this case there is no Israel and the fact that Africa is still mostly colonial, corroborates this clue.

Next, we look to Korea, which is not Korea but Chosun, ruled by Japan. Now we know that this globe was made before 1945.

Because today's Thailand is labeled Siam, Vietnam and Cambodia are French Indochina, we can close in on a time before the end of World War II.

Over in Europe, the boarder of Germany includes Austria so we know the globe was made AFTER Germany claimed Austria which was in 1939. Now we know the globe was made between 1939 and 1945.

It's beautiful a 12" Replogle Globe with a floor stand probably made in the early 1940's! How wonderful!
