Bowel Cancer survivors and people who had cared for relatives with Bowel Cancer joined patient charities and academics for a warm but frank discussion about how Bowel Cancer had affected their lives. Eeshita Azad (BBPC CIC) interpreted between people speaking different languages and used poetry exercises to help people express their feelings.
Participants discussed disengagement with health services, including General Practitioners. They cited experiences of ineffectual and/or negligent GPs. They also discussed lack of awareness of issues such as Bowel Cancer because of taboos and a lack of clear communication from medical organisations, including the difficulties with medical language and jargon.
At the end of the workshop the participants seemed glad that they took part in it. Several approached the project team asking to be involved in health promotion in future.
Eeshita used this workshop as inspiration for a bilingual poem about the participants’ experiences that has been made into a poetry-film.
