Transforming African Landscapes: A boot camp in Malawi for a climate resilient future

Discover how the power of community and resilience is reshaping the future of food security and land restoration in Africa. In July 2023, in the vibrant village of Chituwi, Malawi, 60 environmental experts and dozens of community members gathered for an impactful resilience boot camp. This event, spearheaded by the World Food Programme (WFP) in collaboration with its Livelihood Assets Resilience Academy (LARA), marked a significant stride in combating land degradation and promoting soil’s health across the region to reduce hunger.

Participants from African universities, governments and NGOs immersed themselves in dynamic sessions focusing on land restoration, water harvesting and strategies to withstand weather extremes. This initiative is part of WFP's commitment to restore the productive potential of land, reinforce the capacities of African institutions to address soil degradation problems and empower communities to directly transform their lives and reduce their humanitarian needs.

The boot camp offered practical solutions to tackle climate change, enhance green landscapes, and ensure sustainable food security. WFP’s integrated resilience work aligns with our mission to address the root causes of hunger and malnutrition, providing long-term solutions to Malawi, Niger, Mauritania, Chad, Mali, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Somalia, and other African nations to withstand the climate crisis.
