Johnson St. Bridge Lifts: Naval Tugboats Escort Canada’s Oldest Steam Crane Barge at Victoria BC

Welcome to Victoria Harbour in Victoria, BC, Canada. Watch as the Johnson Street Bridge rises not once but twice to make way for a rare and historic harbour movement. After a complete refit at Point Hope Shipyard that lasted nearly six months, the iconic 1957 YD 250 steam crane barge is ready to return to service. On March 13, while tied up at the dock at Point Hope, she put on a powerful show with a dramatic steam blow-off. Then, on April 4, naval tugboats CFAV Glendale and CFAV Lawrenceville arrived from CFB Esquimalt, prompting the bridge to rise as they entered the lower harbour to retrieve the barge. The bridge lifts once more as the convoy makes its way through the upper harbour toward Esquimalt. This video captures the full journey—bridge lifts, tugboat precision, and a piece of Canadian maritime history in motion.
