“Si Nos Dejan” by Luis Miguel, also known as El Sol de México (“The Sun of Mexico”), is a traditional Mexican ranchera love song often played at weddings and quinceañeras. It tells a classic Mexican love story — a man speaking to the woman he loves, saying “Si nos dejan” (translated as “If they let us”) we’ll be happy, everything will be beautiful, and we’ll forget everyone and everything else.
The song reflects the traditional idea that parents once had to approve a relationship before a couple could be together, while also romanticizing the dream of love conquering all.
