Pentecost: The Holy Spirit and the Mission and Ministry of the Church (An Exploration of Acts 2)
Since the time of the church fathers, the church itself (that is, the worldwide community of Jesus followers) has been likened to a boat. And, like the tall wooden ships of long ago, the boat that is the church does not receive her power from anything within herself. Rather, our ship is driven by what could be called a wind from above— a wind which “blows where it chooses,” to quote our Lord (cf. John 3:8). That wind is the Holy Spirit.
In this sermon, we explore a pivotal moment in the history of the church: Pentecost. On that day, the wind that is the Holy Spirit filled the sails of the church, empowering her to go out into the world and fulfill her mission of proclaiming the word of God to people of all nations.
