#10 Gibson SG

이번 소개해 드릴 기타는 깁슨의 SG입니다. 80년대 초반에 나온 모델이고 특별한 명칭이 추가적으로 없는 걸로 스탠다드 모델인 것 같습니다. 사실 SG는 현대 모델들과 타 사의 SG 모델들도 많이 써 왔지만 이 기타를 쳐보고 나서는 다른 SG모델들에 손이 덜 가기 시작했습니다. 얇고 가벼운 바디에서 오는 울림이 경쾌한 모델으로 오리지널 픽업이 엄청난 볼륨을 내뿜습니다. 기타에서 가장 마음이 가는 부분은 큰 헤드 사이즈입니다. 마치 빈티지 길드 기타의 헤드스톡을 보는 것 같은 느낌을 줄 정도로 큰 사이즈가 묵직한 울림을 만들어 줍니다. 헬리비젼 같은 헤비한 사운드를 만드는 밴드에서 주로 사용했는데 디스토션이 걸렸을 때 빨랫줄 같은 소리가 쭉 뻗어 나오는 모습이 인상적이었습니다.


처음 기타를 가져왔을 때는 기타가 오랫동안 케이스 안에 보관되었었기 때문에 한참 손을 보고 연주를 해주어야 했습니다. 액션이 너무 낮게 세팅되어 있었기 때문에 줄을 갈면서 액션을 높였다 낮췄다 하며 제 줄에 맞는 세팅을 찾아보려고 했습니다. 이것도 기타 수집의 재미가 아닌가 합니다. 사실 리페어샵에 가서 세팅을 받는 것이 더 전문적이고 안전하겠지만 결국 제가 원하는 세팅은 제 손으로만 찾을 수 있다는 생각이 들어서 구조적인 변형을 주지 않는 선에서 기타 세팅을 해보고 있습니다. 그런데 낮게 세팅된 줄이 좀처럼 높아지지 않아서 브릿지를 자세히 보니 브릿지 폴 포스트 아랫부분이 마모되어서 폴 높이 조절이 잘 안되고 있었습니다. 임시방편으로 피크를 오려서 브릿지 밑에 끼웠는데 다행히 원하는 높이가 나와서 그 후엔 큰 문제 없이 잘 쓰고 있습니다. 기타는 만듦새가 아주 어려운 악기는 아니라서 이런 식의 자가 수리가 가능합니다. 이런 수리들을 조금씩 하면서 악기에 대해 알아가는 것도 재미입니다.


Today's guitar is Gibson SG from early 1980s. This version of SG doesn't have extra specification, so I'm guessing it's a standard model. I had other SGs in the past but after I got this guitar I gradually settled on this SG. Thin, light body creates vibrant sound while the original high-powered pickups amplifies it to a great extent. Its bigger than usual headstock reminds me of old guild guitars with a substential soundwave. I used the guitar in bands like Hellivision in which the distorted sound really showcased the guitar's ability to roar.


When I first got the guitar, it had been sitting in the case for a long time; so it took a while to restore its playability. The action on the guitar was so low that I had to adjust the bridge quite a bit to get it right for the strings I use. I guess this is a part of the fun in getting new guitars. The setting would get done better at the pro guitar shop, but spending time with the guitar and getting to know it better are something I come to like much more. As I was adjusting the bridge, I found out that the wood beneath bridge pole was damaged and wouldn't give me the height I wanted. So I made a make-shift support with a pick and it gave me the right height for the bridge. Guitar generally isn't too complicated to work with, so with a little time and attention, it isn't too difficult to get around it. This kind of small adjustment makes you understand the instrument better.
