First published in 1967, Ernest Cole’s "House of Bondage" has been lauded as one of the most significant photobooks of the twentieth century, revealing the horrors of apartheid to the world for the first time and influencing generations of photographers around the globe.
For the December Aperture PhotoBook Club gathering, Aperture executive director Sarah Meister joined Leslie Matlaisane, Chairperson of the Ernest Cole Family Trust and nephew of Ernest Cole, Aperture’s Denise Wolff, editor of this edition, and the book’s designer Oliver Barstow to discuss the power and legacy of "House of Bondage," the challenges and process behind making a new edition of such groundbreaking work, and the importance of seeing it published for the first time in South Africa.
