Skopje, North Macedonia’s quirky capital, is one of the most unusual cities in the Balkans. Blending Ottoman mosques, Byzantine churches, and neoclassical monuments with a touch of modern extravagance, it’s historic, eccentric, and full of surprises. In this video, we spend one day exploring the best things to do in Skopje — from the Old Bazaar and ancient fortresses to the grand statues and bridges that earned it the nickname “Disneyland of the Balkans.”

We start our morning at Skopje Fortress, an ancient stronghold dating back to the 6th century. Once used by Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans, it offers sweeping views of the city and the Vardar River. From there, it’s a short walk to the Old Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest markets in the Balkans. Here, narrow lanes are filled with jewelry shops, filigree crafts, souvenir stalls, and cozy cafés. Within the bazaar stands the elegant Mustafa Pasha Mosque, built in 1492, a beautiful reminder of Skopje’s Ottoman past.

Nearby, we visit a hidden 17th-century church, partly built below ground when Christian buildings were forbidden to stand tall. The modest courtyard holds the tomb of Macedonian hero Goce Delčev, and the interior features intricate wood carvings and centuries-old frescoes.

Crossing into modern Skopje, the change is dramatic. The Skopje 2014 Project transformed the city with neoclassical facades, ornate fountains, and hundreds of statues. At the center of it all is Macedonia Square, crowned by the massive “Warrior on a Horse” statue — believed to represent Alexander the Great. Nearby landmarks include the Macedonia Gate, modeled after Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, and Woman-Warrior Park, where the now-clothed statue of Prometheus became one of the city’s most talked-about monuments.

Crossing the 15th-century Stone Bridge, we explore the new riverside attractions — the Bridge of Civilizations leading to the Archaeological Museum, and the Art Bridge, lined with sculptures of Macedonia’s artists and writers. Along the Vardar River, the city’s pirate-ship restaurants add another quirky touch to Skopje’s skyline.

We also stop at the Mother Teresa Memorial House, honoring Skopje’s most famous native, with exhibits showcasing her personal letters and a small chapel dedicated to her legacy.

Love it or find it over-the-top, Skopje is a city that leaves an impression — where history, faith, and ambition collide in the most unexpected ways.
