In September, I spent a beautiful day at the West Elden climbing area in Flagstaff, Arizona. We climbed two classic trad routes: PMC and Five Easy Pieces. With perfect weather, crisp air, and scenic views of the ponderosa pines, it was the kind of climbing day you dream about.
West Elden sits on the lower slopes of the San Francisco Peaks and is known for its volcanic dacite cliffs, offering a wide variety of climbing styles. Developed in the 1970s and 80s, this area has become a Flagstaff classic, with both trad and sport routes ranging from beginner-friendly to advanced testpieces. The rock features cracks, faces, and unique formations shaped by ancient volcanic activity.
