A horseshoe shape made of rock with a high back, sloping sides and low front is my favourite wilderness fireplace design. The rocks absorb heat and radiate it back when the fire dies down. The rocks at the back of the fire pit reflect light and heat up to create a chimney effect that helps carry smoke up into the air above those enjoying the fire. The lower front allows more heat to radiate toward the viewer and allows a better view of the fire right down to the coals. In this video, we cover some aspects of site selection and show this design being built on a wilderness campsite.
