This episode critically examines whether platforms can effectively self-regulate or require explicit regulatory oversight, exploring various forms that such regulation might take to balance worker protection with platform sustainability.
About the series:
‘Gig Economy – The Indian Way: The High Tide Which Lifts All Boats’ presented by Srini Raju Centre for IT and the Networked Economy (SRITNE), ISB, is a documentary series that dives deep into the significant growth and intricate dynamics of the blue-collar gig economy of India. Emerged from platform experiments around 2016, these business model innovations have revolutionised how we access various conveniences at our fingertips.
However, this growth has come with hidden human costs. As the blue-collar delivery workers power our convenience economy, yet many still struggle with challenges like uncertain incomes, long working hours, and lack of job security and benefits.
While regulatory intervention may be necessary to address the challenges faced by blue-collar delivery partners, such measures must be carefully designed to avoid placing additional strain on platforms that are already financially stretched, if not under stress.
