About 90,000 people are diagnosed with Parkinson’s every year. “Parkinson's is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world, and in Florida, we have the highest percentage per capita of any state in the country,” said Michelle Martin, Lee Health’s Parkinson Program Manager.
Symptoms aren’t just limited to issues with motor functions. “There are things like anxiety, depression, apathy, pain.”
Lee Health offers a free Parkinson’s Program to help those in Lee County better manage their condition. “Parkinson's disease can be successfully managed over decades, and that's the focus of our program, is helping people to learn the tools and the resources needed to live well for a long time with Parkinson's,” said Martin.
The program offers movement classes, navigation, education, peer-to-peer enrichment, social opportunities, and much more. “It's a lot easier to be proactive and prevent some of the challenges with Parkinson's of mobility and movement than to wait until it gets really bad and then work on them,” said Martin.
The program is also open to care partners. “The care partner is learning about what to expect and how they can be the most helpful to their person and that’s really, really, really important,” said Martin. You can learn more by searching for Parkinson Program on Leehealth.org.
