The Late Qing and Meiji Japan explores the profound transformations that swept across East Asia from the late modern period until around 1914. This documentary delves into the dramatic shifts in power, culture, and international relations that defined the region during this era. From the fall of the Qing Dynasty and the rise of the Republic of China, to the emergence of Japan as a modern imperial power following the Meiji Restoration, we uncover the stories and events that shaped modern East Asia. This video serves as the fourth episode in our Late Modern megadocumentary, our look at history across the world from 1800 to 1945.

We begin in the Late Qing period, going through the various internal and external challenges faced by the empire. We check out the Opium Wars, Taiping Rebellion, and attempts at modernization amid foreign imperialism, including social changes.

We move onto the eventual fall of the empire, after the Boxer Rebellion, rise of Sun Yat-Sen, and the 1911 Revolution.

In Japan, we witness the coming of the Americans and the fate of the Tokugawa shogunate, the Boshin War, the Meiji Restoration, and the birth of the Empire of Japan. Imperialist ambitions bring it into the Sino-Japanese War, and Russo-Japanese War. We also check out Japanese modernization in weapons, architecture, and art.

Welcome to Late Modern series of the World History Summarized project! The entire project is meant to summarize broad topics in history and balances political history and events, with social/daily life, and culture. If you've watched our History of the World documentary, the project is a perfect next step. The videos are standalone, but presented in a chronological fashion. This series "the Late Modern" takes place after our megadocumentaries "The Ancient World", "The Medieval World", and the "Early Modern". It will be divided into 6 or 7 videos about the Late Modern period (c. 1800 - 1945) all over the world, and will be called Phase 4. Once these videos are completed, we will move onto Phase 5, the FINAL PHASE of the project, but this series will be considered completed, and compiled into ONE MEGA-DOCUMENTARY containing all 6 or 7 parts.
