This panel presentation and discussion was part of the Neurophenomenology & Sacred Space Symposium that took place at the Catholic University of America School of Architecture (Washington, DC) on March 23-25, 2023. The panel was moderated by Yoshio Nakamura..
The task of the panel was to probe into the nature of neurophenomenology and whether it can help us advance in the scientific understanding of architecture in general and sacred architecture in particular. The work and thought of late neuroscientist Francisco Varela loomed large here, but much has occurred since his passing, and a whole new world is unfolding. Additionally, this panel considered connections to what has been termed 'aesthetic cognitivism' by some philosophers (notably Gordon Graham and Christoph Baumberger). Four researchers and scholars (Michael Arbib, Gordon Graham, Yoshio Nakamura, and Sarah Robinson) spoke about these issues and more in this panel.
