Our set follows a character who is experiencing a mental health problem that begins to take over their life, and they feel as though they are being pulled in two different directions and experiences a battle within. The character experiences many different emotions throughout the set, including fear, loneliness, division, and helplessness, as many individuals with mental health issues do. The set ends with our character getting a glimpse of hope after realizing that they are not alone in their struggle.
Our creation process always begins with choosing a theme- most importantly, one that all members of the group feel they can connect to. This past year, we all felt especially drawn to one: mental health. As a diverse group of individuals with varying life experiences and perspectives, we are aware of the ways mental health issues can impact all aspects of a person’s life, and to reflect that we wanted to make a strong effort to de-stigmatize conversations surrounding mental health. We want to emphasize that those who struggle with mental health are certainly not alone, and one of the most powerful things can be finding strength through the people who love and support you, as we so often find with each other, through the light and through the shadow.
