Hi here we have the basic power lift fitted to a lot of these early two cylinder JD , some of you might be lucky and have the more upgraded Powr-trol lift system which would be fitted if the tractor was using an implement with an external hydraulic cylinder , but most were fitted with this basic power lift system , it would lift say an under slung implement in and out of work and was the replacement for basically a big manually operated hand lever or two . As stated they are pretty simple the oil is diverted via a foot operated self resetting valve and when not in use is diverted through the pressure relief valve , amazingly this one had not been tampered with and still had its lead sealed lock bolt in stalled , you do come across them with washers , nuts any old thing jammed in to increase its blow off pressure ! , and thus it’s lift capacity to some extent !!.
I was right regarding the piston seal it is in fact a leather cup , I was thrown by the fact it was rock hard , I softened it in some thinners washed it and reinstalled it and it’s spot on now which is good as I doubt you can get that part any more . Thanks David H.
