The Derby 1932 (1932)

Full title reads: "The Derby 1932"

Introductory intertitles read: "Won by 'April the Fifth' ridden by Freddie Lane for Mr Tom Walls - the famous Actor-Trainer - who made no secret of his confidence ... The Aga Khan's 'Dastur' was second and Lord Roseberry's 'Miracle' third ... but where ... oh, where was the 'certainty' 'Orwell'?"



Epsom Racecourse, Surrey



Crowds of people making their way into the race course. Some are driving and some are on foot. People to one side are holding banners pronouncing their Christian faith with slogans like "It is Time to seek The Lord." Shots of various stalls, including one selling balloons. There are lots of open top buses. Shots of a packed car park. Crowds of people queuing to get in. Lots of people milling around in the area in front of the Grandstand. They are gathered for the horse racing.



Crowds await the arrival of the Royal Party. A car draws up and Queen Mary and King George V get out. They are greeted by various people. The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor) arrives, he walks into the building very quickly. Quick shot of the arrival of the Duke of Kent. Arrival of Duke of York (Prince Albert, King George VI) and Duchess of York (Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother). The Duchess is wearing a fox fur stole. L/S of the Royal party in the Royal Box, the King waves his top hat.



Crowds gathered around the book makers stands. C/U bookie and his board with the gambling odds.



The horses walk down to the start of the race - a mounted policeman on a white horse leads them. A building in the background carries large adverts for Guinness.



The horses are led down to the start of the Epsom course. (Sadly without the sound track it is difficult to name the horses.) Somewhere amongst the runners are : April the Fifth, Dastur, Miracle and Orwell.



Quick shot of the Royal Box. Several members of the Royal Family are watching the racing with binoculars.



The horses race around what I think is Tattenham Corner. The crowd of spectators are very large. The horses race down the straight.



Cut away to faces in the crowd.



The horses come past the finish.



Intertitle reads: "... and in slow motion."



Good slow motion shots of the horses running down the straight to the finish (from a different angle). More slow motion footage of them crossing the winning line from opposite the line. The Winner according to the titles is 'April the Fifth'.



The winner is led away to the winner's enclosure. - April the Fifth ridden by Freddie Lane.
