Leonidas I of Sparta was not born a legend, he became one through discipline, duty, and sacrifice. Trained like any other Spartan citizen, Leonidas rose to lead Greece at one of its darkest moments, when the Persian Empire marched west with overwhelming force.
In 480 BC, at the narrow pass of Thermopylae, Leonidas and his Spartans chose resistance over surrender. Vastly outnumbered, they held the pass against the Persian army, buying time for Greece to unite and prepare for survival. Though the battle was lost, the decision to stand changed the course of the war.
