In 2010, this high alpine road, the Transfagarasan, was declared "The best driving road in the world" by BBC - Top Gear show - "even better than the Stelvio". Road cycling Transfagarasan will put a big smile on your face. The road surface is good on the North Side, the scenery is impressive and the climb is not that difficult (5.8% average slope). Transfagarasan road is open each year usually between June to November.

Some quick info about cycling Transfagarasan:
North side climbing Strava Segment: 23km long, 1.382m of altitude gain, 5.8% average slope
Starting altitude: 650m, top of the climb at 2030m
Tour de France winner, Egan Bernal, has climbed it in 58min 09 sec (2017)
"Transfagarasan" means "Trans" + "Fagaras" mountains (that are part of the Romanian Carpathians)
There is also a South side that you can reach by passing a 1km tunnel, near Balea Lake at 2030m of altitude
