This was a very neat place that we explored. When doing research we thought we were just going to explore a hospital but turns out when we arrived it was much more then that. We discovered that it was a whole abandoned community/town that contained over 40 buildings, including a fire hall, cafeteria, laundry mat, school, 3 hospitals and much more.
Just a bit of history..
Tranquille sanatorium was a hospital that was built and opened back in 1907, to treat and house patients that had tuberculosis which is also known as the white plague. This was a deadly disease that was the leading cause of death in Canadians back in the 1800's. This hospital was built to prevent the spread of the white plague. The sanatorium became a self sufficient community which housed many staff and patients. There were underground tunnels built that connected to each building making it easy for transferring patients as well as laundry and goods. In 1958 the hospital closed as it was no longer necessary to stay open with the treatment of medications that were introduced. Soon after the sanatorium became a institution for the mentally ill then closed and reopened as a detention center for young offenders. In the early 1900's the institution was permanently closed and offers were put in for purchasing the land. Today a company called Tranquille Farm Fresh owns the land and has turned it into scary escape rooms and offers tours to the public.
