MH: “This is almost remorseful, a sad song. I wrote it with a friend. She sent me a poem called ‘Guardian’s Trust’, and I wrote the last verse. It’s a tough one to explain; it’s one of those songs that I’m not sure I could talk about.”

Michael added from "the screaming fist" to "follow survives." The last line, is roughly about letting go of what I think I know and embracing 'what is', though at the time, I could not have put it like this, which is why it came out like that. It took the journey. 'Time has unfolded my fear', Michael got that from my first collection Separation and Return.

The electric harp has two separate pickup systems. With two separate cables. Michael still had ideas about possible time delay and over dubbing of the sub bass strings, that he never really got to do. So when he used the harp to play Point A/B (+ Guardian's Trust), he would actually unplug the sub bass cable. —SK—

🗞️ On his album, "Taproot," Hedges experimented with a TransTrem guitar. Designed by noted luthier Ned Steinberger, the TransTrem enables the musician playing it to expand the parameters of modulation and create new and exciting guitar sounds - without having to worry about staying in tune.

Q: In concert, Michael performs with his Klein electric harp guitar with TransTrem on Because It's There, Point A, Point B, and Guardian's Trust. Is the Klein about the same as the Steinberger? MM: The TransTrem system was invented by Steinberger and we both had them on Steinberger guitars. Michael was able to get the TransTrem system on his harp guitar made by Klein — that was quite unusual! I think Steve Klein was able to get the hardware from Steinberger. I don’t think that was something they normally did but they made an exception for MH! I don’t recall if Michael recorded anything with that Klein harp guitar. MM=Michael Manring

🗞Q:You’re a big fan of the TransTrem guitar. What draws you to it?
MH: It’s a guitar that bends. It has a whammy bar that you can lock down in a key. So, you can bend all the notes down—they all go down equally. On most whammy bars, you can only do it with one note or use the vibrato. Lately, heavy metal people have been bending it way up or way down. So, you can strum a chord, listen to it ring, grab the whammy bar, bend it down, listen to the whole chord go down in tune, lock it down a whole step down and then you can strum and do harmonics through them. 🎶TransTrem is a guitar vibrato system developed by luthier Ned Steinberger in 1984. Its main feature is to maintain the pitch of each string at the proper tuning interval to the others when the vibrato ("Whammy bar") is used. This allows entire chords to have their pitch bent while remaining in tune, whereas a conventional vibrato system would cause the strings to go out of tune with each other.
