Immunizing children protects them from polio, but delivering the vaccine requires sophisticated logistics, culturally specific communication, and outreach to communities that may not believe immunizations are safe.
Global public health campaigns require massive coordination and while we marvel at their scale, we frequently lose the stories of personal commitment required to make each of these local strategies successful. To celebrate World Polio Day, we are celebrating the Heroes of Polio Eradication (HoPE) and the difference one person can make.
Beyond routine immunizations, Rotarian Tayyaba Gul is an agent for culturally specific communication in Nowshera, Pakistan. She trains female health workers who visit each household to develop personal relationships. They offer prenatal and postnatal care at a local clinic funded by Rotary and conduct training for women on sanitation, hygiene and family planning. Tayyaba coordinates messaging with local Imams who support these activities publicly. As a result, women can determine their own future and care for their families without forfeiting their cultural identity. The women administering polio drops are dressed like them, eat the same food, drink the same tea, speak the same language and live on the same street. They hold each-other’s babies and know their names. They see each-other at the market and share a Mulana. These ongoing, profound relationships ensure that our efforts to support sophisticated logistics can get through the door.
