The UK government has previously claimed some success in getting the numbers of illegal migrants down, but what headway, if any, have they made on sorting out what they’ve termed a "broken" asylum system?
More than 1,400 people have been detected crossing the English channel in a period of four days.
The Illegal Migration Bill, which aims to deport those arriving in the UK without permission, breaches a "number of the UK's human rights obligations”, according to MPs and peers.
