What can we say? We witnessed such a fantastic year of racing in 2016. The finishes were some of the closest and best in this sport’s history. Included in those heart stopping moments was in stock car’s biggest race. The Daytona 500 saw the closest finish in the great race’s history. And the theme kept on going. Harvick somehow held of a charging Edwards at Phoenix, while Edwards somehow got to Busch and used the bump and run at Richmond. And Busch? Well he only got closer to winning on every single active track in the sport.

And Tony Stewart, how can you scrpit a better way to get your final career win. Come down to the wire and use a little muscle in the last turn, just like the man himself in the sport for the last 2 decades. And no he’s not retiring from driving race cars, but him not driving a Cup car will take some getting used to.

We saw the rise of young guns in the sport that will be around for a long time to come. Even with the likes of Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney and Austin Dillon not pulling into victory lane, they will be battling it out with the other top drivers for years to come. Another young gun, Kyle Larson, finally had his moment in the sun at Michigan and pulled off his first career Cup win. Chris Buesher didn’t have to wait as long thanks to a bit of strategy and a big favor from mother nature.

It wasn’t all rosy however as the blade of 2016 didn’t leave our sport unscathed. We lost wonderful people such as Barney Hall, Mary Jane France, Ron Bouchard, and former driver Bryan Clauson. Dale Earnhardt Jr. had to miss the second half of the season because of concussion symptoms from a crash in the June race at Michigan. Thankfully though, he was cleared in December to race in 2017 so he will be driven more than ever to leave a further mark in NASCAR and add another chapter to the Earnhardt legacy.

Some of the sport’s biggest races saw the rise of New Jersey fury. Martin Truex Jr. took the guys and gal to town in a Coke 600 throwdown. He backed it up with a win in the Southern 500, along with two other wins come chase time.

The season ended better than a Hollywood blockbuster as Jimmie Johnson used a bit of luck and one hell of a restart to do something that we may never see in our lifetime again. 7 titles. 7 championships. Richard Petty. Dale Earnhardt. And now Jimmie Johnson. It is a moment in sports history that is truly unforgettable and simply stunning. The moment of jumping out of his car after crossing the finish line will be used for years and decades to come.

What a season. What a ride. 2016 may had been forgettable in so many aspects, but racing wise it was the return of what made us fall in love in the first place. Good, hard racing and amazing finishes. Here’s to hoping we have more of this in 2017!

I’ll probably take a week or two off and relax a bit, and then I’ll begin to work on Daytona 500 stuff (commercial and promos).
