Hodie Christus natus est, a joyous motet that sets the Latin text traditionally associated with the Christmas Day liturgy. The text translates to “Today Christ is born,” and an exclamation “Noe” (an old form of “Noel”) appears throughout the piece, reinforcing the festive and jubilant mood. Sweelinck composed this piece as a polyphonic motet for multiple voices, showcasing his mastery of counterpoint. The motet features energetic imitative entries, where different vocal lines echo and respond to each other, creating a rich,
woven texture.
