Wells is a cathedral city in the county of Somerset, in the southwest of England, near the Mendip Hills.
Population: Around 11,145 people (2021 Census).
Size: It’s often described as England’s smallest city by population and area, but it still has official city status due to its cathedral.
Name Origin: Wells takes its name from natural springs (“wells”) dedicated to St Andrew, which are still visible today in the grounds of the Bishop’s Palace.
Roman & Anglo-Saxon History: A small Roman settlement existed here, and in 704 AD King Ine of Wessex founded a minster church, starting Wells’ long religious heritage.
City Status: Wells has held city status since medieval times because of its cathedral, even though its population is smaller than many towns.
Medieval Market: The city’s market tradition dates back nearly 900 years; markets are still held twice weekly in the historic Market Place.
English Civil War & Monmouth Rebellion: Wells had notable involvement in these major 17th-century events.
Wells Cathedral
Built from the late 12th century, it was one of the first fully Gothic cathedrals in England.
Wells Somerset
It houses the famous scissor arches and an astronomical clock — one of the oldest working medieval clock mechanisms in Britain.
Bishop’s Palace & Gardens
A fortified palace serving as the residence of the Bishops of Bath and Wells for over 800 years, complete with moat and medieval earthworks.
The Bishop's Palace
The moat is fed by the same springs that give the city its name.
Vicars’ Close
Claimed to be Europe’s oldest residential street where people still live, dating back to the mid-14th century.
Penniless Porch
Historic gateway built around 1450, traditionally a spot where beggars could shelter.
Wells Town Hall
The city’s civic building in the Market Place, built in 1779 and now Grade II-listed.
Cultural & Visitor Attractions
Wells and Mendip Museum: Showcases local history, archaeology, and geology.
Markets: Traditional markets in Wells Market Place on Wednesdays and Saturdays still thrive.
Film & TV Location: Wells has served as a backdrop for films and series (e.g., Hot Fuzz).
Surrounding Area & Environment
Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty: Offers scenic walks, limestone gorges (like nearby Ebbor Gorge), and opportunities for outdoor activities.
Close to attractions like Wookey Hole Caves and Cheddar Gorge
