Over the last few years, South Africa has seen the growth of a movement fueled by the slogan, “Put South Africans first.” South Africa’s constitution, written and implemented after the fall of the apartheid regime in the 1990s, actually offers major protections to migrants. It guarantees freedom of movement, education and health care – even to people who aren’t citizens. But in 2024, all 10 parties that form South Africa’s current government all campaigned on curbing migration. So why has South Africa seemingly closed its doors to the rest of the continent over the years?
