We were sad to learn that the Grand Canyon Lodge burned down. In 2009, we produced this 5-minute video capturing the lodge experience and its intriguing history. It was a spectacular one-of-a-kind lodge tucked away in a remote corner of the Grand Canyon's North Rim. However, this is not the first time Grand Canyon Lodge burned down. The first Grand Canyon Lodge was a fleeting triumph. Built in 1928, it burned down, just four years later.
Watch this short video to learn its complete history and experience a visit.
The lodge was designed by architect Stanley Gilbert Underwood, who also designed Bryce Canyon Lodge, Zion Lodge and The Ahwahnee in Yosemite.
Then-director of the National Park Service Horace Albright wrote to Union Pacific Railroad officials to encourage them to rebuild the lodge. Amazingly, Union Pacific resurrected Underwood's lodge from the ashes, and in 1937 it reopened its doors.
Underwood's use of natural building materials, combined with his unique flair for rustic design, was ideally suited to the emerging NPS attitude about architecture in the national parks.
Filmed in high definition, this Grand Canyon Lodge video is a bonus feature on Finley-Holiday's "Bryce, Zion & the North Rim Blu-ray" and is available from www.finleyholiday.com.
This was one of America's Great Lodges of the National Parks. We can only hope there is the will to rebuild it again. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.
