A small handle was the goal of the vise as it makes it considerably easier to operate, giving the user mechanical advantage. Due to thrust bearings and a straight-through pull design, the handle does not need to be long. The hardtail vise operates like a small vise because the handle is easy and quick to turn, plus the handle doesn't pinch fingers. If the handle were any longer, it would get in the way of the user as they place material in the jaws. The vise handle has ridges in order to bend in case a cheater bar is added, therefore protecting the vise from failure.
