1991. Je suis au monastère du XVIᵉ Karmapa, à Rumtek. J’y suis venu à la suite du tournage du film Mémoires d’une autre vie. Quelques mois plus tôt, au monastère de Sera Jhe, en Inde du Sud, j’avais filmé l’histoire du jeune tulkou canadien, Tenzin Sherab.
Durant notre temps passé ensemble au monastère, Tenzin m’avait souvent parlé du IIIᵉ Kongtrul Rinpoché, qu’il avait rencontré à quelques reprises, tant à Montréal qu’en Inde. C’est à Delhi que Kongtrul Rinpoché lui avait révélé que sa propre famille avait autrefois apporté de l’aide à Geshe Jatsé, l’incarnation passée de Tenzin.
Et me voilà maintenant ici, devant la porte derrière laquelle se trouvait Kongtrul Rinpoché. Un très jeune moine me fit signe : Rinpoché était présent, je pouvais entrer.
À peine franchi le seuil, je fus accueilli par un sourire — et surtout par une présence d’une bienveillance saisissante. Je lui expliquai les raisons de ma venue à Rumtek. Il m’accorda alors la permission de filmer.
Lorsque j’installai la caméra et que son visage apparut à l’écran, je fus incapable de poser la moindre question. J’étais entièrement absorbé par sa présence, par le profond sentiment de bien-être qu’elle faisait naître en moi. Le silence s’étira hors du temps.
Puis, après ces secondes suspendues, Kongtrul Rinpoché me fit doucement signe. Il me montra un thangka représentant le premier Kongtrul Rinpoché et me demanda simplement de le filmer.

1991.I am at the monastery of the Sixteenth Karmapa, in Rumtek. I came here following the filming of Memories of Another Life. A few months earlier, at Sera Jhe Monastery in South India, I had filmed the story of the young Canadian tulku, Tenzin Sherab.
During our time together at the monastery, Tenzin often spoke to me about the Third Kongtrul Rinpoche, whom he had met on several occasions, both in Montreal and in India. It was in Delhi that Kongtrul Rinpoche had revealed to him that his own family had once offered help to Geshe Jatsé, the previous incarnation of Tenzin.
And now here I was, standing before the door behind which Kongtrul Rinpoche was staying. A very young monk signaled to me: Rinpoche was present, I could enter.
No sooner had I crossed the threshold than I was greeted by a smile—and, above all, by a presence of striking benevolence. I explained the reason for my visit to Rumtek. He then granted me permission to film.
As I set up the camera and his face appeared on the screen, I found myself unable to ask a single question. I was completely absorbed by his presence, by the deep sense of well-being it awakened within me. The silence stretched beyond time.
Then, after those suspended moments, Kongtrul Rinpoche gently gestured to me. He pointed to a thangka depicting the First Kongtrul Rinpoche and simply asked me to film it.
