Flying off the north coast of Maui, just east of Kahului airport (PHOG). We saw the rain clouds and took a look-see, but with 1,000' ceilings and 3-5 miles of visibility, I decided that it wouldn't make a very scenic (or particularly safe) flight. We did a 180-degree turn and went back to see sunnier parts of the island.
Not a dramatic maneuver, by any means. But, for pilots who haven't flown in "1,000 & 3" weather before, this can give you an dea of what those conditions look like before heading out (i.e. how little you can see). While 1,000' ceilings & 3-mi visibility are the minimums for flight under visual flight rules, it's impressive how little you can see and how few options you have under those conditions.
It's interesting how long a 180 seems to take when you lose sight of the ground. Sure, it's only a minute for a standard rate turn (the one in the video took about 40 seconds), but when you're flying by visual reference and can't see your visual reference, that's a very long minute and it gets pretty spooky. Something else to consider before heading into crummy (but legal) weather.
