My daughter Violet (11) and I hiked deep into the desert of Joshua Tree National Park in search of an epic backcountry camping experience and to climb the park's tallest mountain (Quail Mountain, 5,816 feet / 1,773 m.) We had to carry all of our water, sleep amongst a pack of coyotes, wayfind through overgrown trails and avoid all manor creepy crawlies to accomplish the mission.
Backcountry or wilderness camping is a great way to escape the crowds at the extremely popular Joshua Tree National Park as well as a fantastic way to camp in the park with little to no notice. AllTrails lists this hike (Quail Mountain via CA Riding and Hiking Trail and Stubbe Springs Trail) as a HARD.
Warning!!! Do not go hiking and camping in the desert without proper preparation, water, supplies and navigation. I researched this trip in detail before heading out and carried a Garmin inReach Mini in case of emergency.
