The proclamation of the People's Republic of China was made by Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), on October 1, 1949 in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, marking the founding of a new state under CCP rule, formally called the Central People's Government. Previously, the CCP had proclaimed the creation of the Chinese Soviet Republic (CSR) in 1931 in Ruijin, which lasted until 1937. During the proclamation ceremony, the national anthem "March of the Volunteers" was played, the new flag of the People's Republic of China (the five-star red flag) was raised, and celebrated with a military parade of the People's Liberation Army. In December 1949, the Republic of China (ROC) withdrew to the island of Taiwan.
