Funny thing, this is one of the easiest songs from Live at Leeds!
"We'd like to play three hit singles from our past for ya. Three selected hit singles, the three easiest. There's "Substitute", which we like. [...] Thank you. That was our first number four" (Pete Townshend, Live at Leeds).
It's simply amazing how every single song is so much powerful compared to the studio versions, especially this one.
The bass groove is based on major pentatonics in D and minor pentatonics in E.
P.S. At the end of the song John accidentally plays the D# so I decided to play it too ;)
