The Dambusters, is undoubtedly one of the greatest British War films ever made. However one aspect of it has always seemed unsatisfactory to me. The sequences depicting the testing of the bouncing bomb, show the drop tests of the smaller version of the weapon conducted using a Mosquito, not the full size bomb being dropped by a Lancaster. There is a good reason for that. In the 1950's when the film was made, the film of the testing of the full sized bomb was actually still classified, so couldn't be used in the film. Subsequently, of course the film of the tests was declassified, but of course the film continues to be shown with the tests being conducted from a Mosquito. This short video shows what this iconic film might have looked like had the film of the testing of the full sized bomb been available when it movie was made.
