Eye Technician Program at Portland Community College

Accredited Ophthalmic Technician Training Program
The Eye Technician  program is the only certificate program of its kind in the western United States at the intermediate training level as an ophthalmic technician and accredited by the International Council of Accreditation (ICA). The program is located at Portland Community College’s Cascade Campus, with a dedicated lab that students practice on ophthalmic equipment to hone their technical skills in preparation of working in a clinical environment. Our program opens local, national and international opportunities. With a tenured 20-year history of success, the PCC Eye Technician program boasts a high placement rate for students within three months of graduation. 

The certificate program is an Internationally Recognized 1 year Certification. Before completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the written portion for certification through the International Joint Commission Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology iJCAHPO, at the level of certified ophthalmic technician (COT). Becoming a certified ophthalmic technician (COT) gives candidates a competitive edge in a field where employers are actively seeking credentialed candidates. 

Clinical Practicum Experience Internships known as a clinical practicum are at medical practices, available at more than 40 community partner locations in and around the Portland metro area. The practicum allows students to get practical experience, network with current allied health professionals, and potentially become hired at their practicum location. Practicums are available at HMOs, hospital based clinics, large or small private practices and academic institutions.

Career Success Candidates who are successful in this career have a strong desire for helping people, motivated to learn about the role of allied health in Ophthalmology and assisting Ophthalmologists. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, dedicated to helping their community care for vision and eye health, and have an aptitude for technical hands-on skills with specialized equipment. Strong computer skills are highly recommended, strong communication skills verbally and written and adaptability to a changing industry are highly sought after by potential employers.
