In April 1778, buccaneering Scottish captain John Paul Jones brought the American War of Independence to the shores of Britain in a daring raid on the small town of Whitehaven. A controversial figure with a mind for vengeance, Jones' raid was only partially successful, yet it also struck a significant blow to the British sense of military and naval superiority and gave lifted American spirits at a crucial time.
